1 July 2012: important legislative changes

On 1 July 2012, DIAC implemented significant changes to the General skill migration program (GSM) and the employer sponsored program.

Some of the changes include:

- The age limit for applying for a visa has been raised to 50 years, opening new opportunities for people who didn't qualify previously.

- The distinction between "off-shore" and "on-shore" visas has been removed.

- The recent work experience criteria has been removed for GSM (but may still be required for skills assessment purposes)

- The points test score is now set at 60 points for GSM

- People interested in applying for a GSM visa must first lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) if they meet the threshold criteria. If so, they may later on be invited to apply for a visa.
