18.10.2013: re-introduction of the Temporary Protection visa
On 18.10.2013, the Federal Government re-introduced the Temporary Protection Visa (subclass 785). This visa is for people who can make claims under the International Refugees Conventions, but who arrived in Australia without a visa (ex: "Boat People").
The temporary protection visa was abolished in May 2008, meaning that all people who were "refugees" under the International Refugees Convention would then obtain a permanent visa to stay in Australia.
Now, with the re-introduction of the temporary protection visa, people who enter Australia illegally (without visa) will only, if they meet the international definition of "refugee", be granted a temporary visa.
